Despite a lot of the bad press ED gets, it does have rules and has been actively cleaning the site of illegal content, attack pages, and racism (check their deletions and word replacements of nigger, jew, spic, and even the infamous aboriginal article and also their page "swear jar"). They also do actively delete both child pornography and bestiality pictures as they find them. If you know what you're doing, you can get content removed, but you need to keep the following in mind:

  • The best way is to contact a sysop and calmly explain the problem without claiming you'll do anything if they don't take action. Some are more receptive than others, but the ones that have been deleting attack articles are the ones most likely to hear your case. Just browse their deletion log for some people to contact.
  • If your personal information has been posted and it cannot be proved that you gave it out publicly, tell them and they'll most likely delete it.
  • If an article has copyright materials that cannot be claimed as fair use, explain that to a sysop.
  • In the case of illegal pictures, link to it and just say why it's illegal. Their rules specifically forbid child porn (real or drawn) and bestiality (real, but not drawn).
  • DO NOT threaten or attack them. Legal threats get automatic bans and while they give you an email to direct your complaints, you'll be fighting an uphill battle. Vandalism (which, in this case, is replacing or deleting any material) will earn a swift ban and make it much harder to get something removed. While they do allow regular users to delete material for many reasons (they will never ban a person for deleting unfunny shit), registering a new account and deleting or tagging anything for deletion is a very bad idea.
  • Don't try to talk to them "on their level." Just be direct and polite.
  • They highly value free speech. Do not identify yourself as an enemy of free speech or they will find any angle they can use to keep their stuff posted. Streisand Effect.
  • They are DMCA compliant, but make absolutely, positively sure you have a strong case. Abusing the DMCA is something they view with extreme hostility and the nature of filing a complaint means giving out your personal information. A lot of users are quite happy to file a counter and your abuse of the DMCA will be added to the article. You're a lot better off talking with a sysop.

Things you can get deleted:

  • Illegal stuff
  • Attack articles. Note that their definition of an attack article is something that details a person nobody cares about, doesn't cite any valid research showing they've caused drama on a major website, and/or takes a tone of being written by somebody with a personal vendetta. If it spends most of its time urging other people to attack somebody or throwing personal insults, it's an attack article. They go by the philosophy of "show, don't tell."
  • Invasions of privacy

Things you're not likely to get deleted:

  • Anything that shows its extensive research. Most attack articles get deleted because they make no attempt to prove the person did something stupid.
  • Articles about major websites and celebrities.
  • Anything where the only case you can make is "it hurts my feelings." If you do some lame shit and it ends up on ED with screencaps and links, you're out of luck.
  • The TV Tropes article. Maybe you don't like what it has to say, but it's been overhauled to show its research and get rid of that butthurt ex-troper tone. It's "tropers of note" section was also deleted due to personal army bullshit, anyway. Nobody but Fast Eddie really matters that much to the future of the site.

Now you know. And Knowing Is Half The Battle.
