Well, there are "differences" however they're socially constructed differences...like race. I mean, race doesn't ~actually~ even exist, it's entirely a social construct built upon completely arbitrary and inconsequential physical traits. Just as we have no racial differences between height or eye color, we could just as easily have none for skin color.
Much of the wanton seperation between bronies and furries comes largely in part to one side wanting to look "more normal" than the other. Which is also what causes such intense intergroup hatred amongst those who sexually get off on it. Although most fringe communities/interests like to try and tout their "independent thinking" and "non-conformity" almost all of them seek general social acceptance and "normalcy", which they often attempt to create by attacking those in their own interest by creating socially constructed differences.
Although bronies and furries ~are~ technically one in the same, they do have different origination points for their base communities. Bronies, especially those who are into it as far as a sexual nature are largely derived from "Poney Players/Lovers" or "Poney Enthusiasts" (the extra "e" is added as a means of being able to identify each other in "normal" settings). Which in itself is a subset community of BDSM, the "bottom" role being played by the one forced to act like an animal and the "top" role being played by the one who controls/rides them.
Technically speaking, nearly *ALL* fetishes are rooted in the exact same base level sexual interests. Sexual interests, no matter what they are, can be broken down into just two things...dominance and submission. If you can "relate" the fetish/sexual interest into your own personal perceptions of want as far as sexual dominance and submission, then it's actually viable to "like" pretty much any sexual interest there is, to some degree or another.
There are other factors though, for example if the smell of shit makes you gag, obviously you wouldn't be able to relate to a scat fetishist very well at all.
